The NHL announced Wednesday a series of rule changes for the upcoming season. These rule changes were unanimously approved by the NHL's board of governors, general managers and competition committee.
Four rule changes have been approved for the 2024-25 season:
- The coach's challenge will now be to remove the puck penalty without playing. The challenge only applies to delay of game penalties when it is deflected from a player, say, the glass or the boards. It will not apply in a situation where a judgment call is made as to how the puck came out of play. The NHL defined this as “puck hits or when the puck is shot in the defensive zone.” If the challenge fails, a two-minute penalty is assessed to the challenging team in addition to the existing penalty.
- Corrections have been made to the rule regarding line changes after a net release. The defending team cannot make a change if the goalkeeper accidentally clears the net. Previously, the law only applied to publishers.
- After a foul call, the offensive player will now receive one warning for a faceoff violation. The same is true for defensive players.
- The teams are about to be issued one warning to the players sitting on the boards; the other group will also be notified. A team that receives a warning will receive a minor bench fine for future offences.
The league stated that the names in this publication are not final. They added that NHL Hockey Operations will work on the specific language of the rulebook in the coming weeks.
