Boxing Insider – Fight Night at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, NJ
On Saturday, May 11, Boxing Insider Promotions returns pay-per-view boxing to the Tropicana Showroom for the first time in seven years, and the show has a local flavor.
Atlantic City junior middleweight Justin Figueroa (8-0, 6 KOs) is one of the featured fights. Local fans may remember Figueroa's days as a football star at Holy Spirit High School, and he proved himself to be the best in South Jersey in the freshman ring. Buoyed by his confidence, he recently returned from San Antonio, where he registered his eighth straight victory, a decision over Christian Aguirre, and as usual, celebrated by dancing the “Worm” across the ring.
Junior featherweight John Leonardo (10-1-1, 4 KOs) is in an eight-round fight and brings a healthy following with him. Hailing from nearby Manalapan Township in the Garden State, he is a former New Jersey Golden Gloves champion who goes by the nickname “Bodyshot.”
Avious Griffin of Chattanooga, TN (13-0, 12 KOs) brings an interesting story to his eight-round fight. At a time when he should have been building a professional career, Griffin spent eleven months in prison when he was wrongly accused of murder. That's clear, nothing can stop him.
Brooklynite Pryce Taylor (3-0, 2 KOs), a heavyweight who could be an interesting prospect, will also take part in the show, in a four-rounder.
Another entrant is middleweight Jacob Solis, who debuted there in December and is now 3-0, all wins coming by knockout. Solis also has a passionate fan following and helps grow the sport by serving as a boxing coach.
There are other good prospects in the works. Junior welterweight Dwyke Flemmings (6-0, 6 KOs) is a boxer from Paterson, NJ who has recorded four knockouts in one round and will be in a six-rounder schedule; Middleweight Famous Wilson (4-0, 2 KOs) is a former four-round New York Golden Gloves champion. Other four-round contenders include super middleweight Joel Telles of Brooklyn (2-0, 2 KOs) and Koby Williams, also of Brooklyn, a first-time NY Golden Gloves and Metro champion.
