Bill Haney Accuses Oscar De La Hoya of Jealousy
Bill Haney, the father and trainer of former WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney, took to social media to launch a tirade against Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya.
Still bitter about De La Hoya speaking his mind this week about Devin's inability to sell, Bill accused the famous former multi-division world champion of being a “middleman” and jealous of Dev's success in his short time.
Bill says De La Hoya got upset after his co-star Ryan Garcia was caught cheating, and started talking, lying about Devin's marketing.
Allegations of Cheating and Lying
“Oscar De La Hoya, the famous producer who runs like big Willie with the money of the DAZN network,” said Bill Haney, Devin's father, on social media, taking a shot at Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya.
“Oscar, you didn't get angry until your fighter, Ryan Garcia, was caught cheating. Then you lied, saying that Devin is not selling. “Oscar, you haven't sold since Canelo Alvarez, he said he has a bad business,” said Bill.
Devin's PPV record is not good. So it's hard for Bill to argue with what De La Hoya said that Devin can't sell, but he doesn't have any fights to prove that he can sell.
The PPV numbers have not been released yet for the Haney vs. Ryan Garcia, but there are rumors that he is disappointing. Whose fault is that? Could that be Haney's?
Comparing Ticket Sales and Popularity
“He said we don't sell. Our last five events have drawn over 100,000 people, more than anyone on your list today. Therefore, Mr. Oscar De La Hoya, I want to know: are you stealing, or are you jealous that Devin 'The Dream' Haney is the youngest undisputed champion in the four-belt era? That's the moment you participated in,” said Bill.
Selling tickets and PPVs are two different things. A fighter can attract more fans to their fights by offering cheap tickets, offering low fire sale prices, and popularity in a small part of town. Bringing in PPV buys is different because it needs national popularity, and you can't give that away like comps or low prices.
Personal Attacks
“I know that we did not sell, but I know that there is one thing that I wish to sell as soon as possible, and that is fish nets. So keep your a** out of it,” Bill told De La Hoya.
