Liverpool rejected the chance to sign Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon this week after the Magpies wanted Jarell Quansah included in the deal, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
Newcastle are looking to sell one of their key players this weekend to meet the June 30 accounting deadline or risk being stripped of points under the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules.
That led to talks with Liverpool about England international Gordon, Newcastle's player of the year who moved to Tyneside from Everton 18 months ago.
But with the Merseysiders already having Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo capable of playing in Gordon's preferred wide left position – and the fact that they don't want to lose the quality Quansah – the deal fell through.
It leaves Newcastle in dire straits with clubs knowing they need cash, and fast.

Who else could Newcastle sell?
Chelsea are reportedly interested in Swedish striker Alexander Isak and homegrown midfielder Elliot Anderson is reportedly wanted by Nottingham Forest.
Bruno Guimaraes has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain but that deal seems unlikely as the Brazilian midfielder is currently in his country at the Copa America.
Gordon is also on international duty with England at Euro 2024 and hopes to start tomorrow's Last 16 match against Slovakia after coming off the bench against Slovenia on Tuesday.
“I think if I train as much as I can, I do everything I can every day, that's my way of giving the manager a head start on the selection and the rest I can't control,” he said.
“I don't think I need the chance to look for it too much. Like I said, I have a lot of control and that's what I do every day and I try to push the guys as much as I can in training.
“When I get on I try to continue, I don't try to get out. I'm playing to start the next game, that's my mindset.”
Careless Gordon's bike problem
Gordon spoke to the media revealing bad food on his chin and scars on his hands and arms from a bike accident on Wednesday.
“It was supposed to be a recovery bike ride and I went down the mountain and tried to take a picture of my family and before I could I looked down. It's just a small cut, it's not painful,” he said.
“The electric is much faster than normal bikes – the front brake is on the left hand and I tried to turn off the right to slow down and it didn't slow down until I stopped and I had gone ten feet. in the air first.
