The Utah Hockey Club needed defensemen this year. They didn't have any registered guards signed, but now they have two. The first was Sergachev, but they weren't done yet.
When the day begins #UtahHockeyClub they had no id-men under contract for 2024-25.
Now they have two.

As part of the deal, the Devils sent Marino and the 153rd pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NHL Draft for the 49th pick overall in the second of 2024 and 2025 second-round conditional picks that were originally Edmonton's.
NHL news: Red Wings, Predators, Sharks, Utah, and HHOF
The Devils are not retaining Marino's salary, as he was owed $4.4 million over the next three seasons. This will free up money that Brett Pesce will receive when free agency opens.
