Jude Bellingham is happy to 'give back a bit' to England's critics

Jude Bellingham says it was “nice to give a little bit back” to people who “talked a lot of rubbish” after his injury-time wonder goal powered England past Slovakia last night and into the quarter-finals. Euro 2024.

After a torturous 95 minutes, England finally registered a goal when Bellingham produced a brilliant overhead kick to cancel out Ivan Schranz's goal in Gelsenkirchen. Harry Kane scored England's winner with a header in the first minute of extra time.

England's performance in Germany has drawn a lot of criticism and, although this was not the best as the Three Lions once again appeared to lack ideas tactically, Bellingham will hope that going into Saturday's quarter-final against Switzerland will help calm the group.

He said: “You hear people talking a lot of rubbish. It's great if you can deliver and give them back a little.

“For me, football, being on the field, scoring goals and celebrating is my release. Maybe it was a message to a few people. I was so happy at the end, so much adrenaline.

“It's a feeling like no other. In international football, in playoff football, it feels even worse, because you have 30 seconds left to go home.

“Listening to all the trash, you feel like you've let the nation down. In one ball everything can change.”

The Real Madrid midfielder added: “People talk too much. You have to take it easy on yourself. We work hard for this game.

“We come in every day, we work hard to play for the fans, sometimes it doesn't go well and sometimes it seems like there are a lot of people, it's not nice to hear.

“But you can always use it and at times like that, it's good to give it back to other people.”
