Edmonton Oilers Sign Jeff Skinner to 1-year Contract – Hockey Writers – Oilers Transactions
After being bought out by the Buffalo Sabres, Jeff Skinner signs with the Edmonton Oilers. Skinner will be fined one year and $3 million. Despite the Sabers choosing to go the other way, Skinner still has some good hockey left in the tank.
Skinner Signs With Oilers
Although he had three years left on his contract, the Sabers chose to buy out those remaining years. Apart from that, Skinner proved to be productive and played a key role in their formidable attack. In two straight seasons (2021-22, 2022-23), he had consecutive 30-hit seasons. His nose for the net and finishing ability were the stars of their offense.
Skinner had a career year in the 2022-23 season with 82 points and 35 goals. His offensive impact is evident, and he is a good passer. However, what he thrives on in production, he lacks in defense.

Skinner is an underachiever with his defensive play. Not big on the forehead either, but annoyingly big. For a team that needs more depth and offense, getting Skinner at this price point is a good move. During his career, he has 357 goals and 670 points in more than 1,000 games played.
Skinner is a Big Boost Offensively
You can't go too deep or sin too much. For a team looking to win the Stanley Cup and add depth to their forward line, this is a great combination. Skinner has shown impressive finishing ability and is a deep scorer. For a guy who has scored 30 points five times and 40 goals once, this is a great catch.
Skinner gets to be an integral part of the Oilers team that lost in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. He finds himself in the same position as Matt Duchene did last season as he was bought and put on the team that was running for the Dallas Stars. This is great for both sides and for a player with good hockey left in the tank.
