Two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer is set to bid a “bittersweet” farewell to the DP World Tour at the BMW International Open in Germany.
Langer will make his 513th and final appearance on the circuit at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried, 50 years after his debut.
The 66-year-old German has won 42 times on the DP World Tour over five decades and continues to enjoy success on the senior circuit, but has decided to call time on his appearance on his home tour.
“I don't know yet (how to react),” said the former Ryder Cup player and captain.
“I have never said goodbye to anything so far in terms of golf, this will be the first time and I feel it will be very stressful.
“It means a lot to play in front of the home crowd and I hope to be successful, but I feel that the golf course is a lot longer than it used to be, and that is a challenge for me.
“I'm getting shorter and the lessons are getting longer and that doesn't mix well.
“I grew up about 45 minutes from here. I worked as an assistant pro 30 minutes from here at the Munich Country Club.
“I have many friends, relatives and people who have been with me, they have supported me for many years in the game of golf, and obviously I have played this tournament many times.
“It's the only one I haven't won in Germany. So it was always tricky, but I'm glad to be back.”
Langer, who will play Marcel Siem and Italian Open winner Martin Kaymer in the first two rounds, was due to make his final Masters appearance in April, but that plan had to be pushed back a year due to an Achilles tear suffered while playing in a pickle. in February.
“I feel much better,” he added. “It's been five months since the surgery and things are getting better.
“I'm starting to travel a lot. It's still hard at times, but golf isn't a problem.
“I can rotate well. I can transfer weight. I am a little weak, my calf muscle is much smaller in my left leg than my right leg. My balance is not perfect, but we will fix it.”
