The Tottenham deal falls apart as Genoa fail to reach an agreement over the money for Djed Spence
Tottenham's plans for defender Djed Spence have hit a cliff as his permanent move to Genoa collapsed.
BBC Sport's Nizaar Kinsella reported that Genoa had failed to secure a discounted deal for Spence despite lengthy negotiations with the London club.
The Italian club expressed an interest in making Spence's loan move permanent but could not agree anything less than £8.5 million with Spurs.
Negotiations between these clubs lasted for about a month but ultimately did not result in a change.
Despite this setback, Genoa may reconsider if Tottenham lower their price this window.
Spence's journey to Tottenham
Spence, who joined Spurs from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022 for £12.5 million, has seen limited action with the Lilywhites. Since his arrival, he has played only six games for the team, which is only 41 minutes on the field.
And while his first loan spell at Leeds was a failure, Spence spent the latter half on loan at Genoa, where he impressed, making 16 Serie A appearances. He started half of those games and appeared as a substitute in others.
The 23-year-old defender proved versatile as he played in different positions in defense and midfield, showing an adaptability and strength that impressed the Italian club.
Tottenham aim to recoup as much of their initial capital as possible through the sale of the Englishman this summer.
With Spence under contract until June 30, 2027, the club is looking at other options for his future.
As the transfer window continues, Spurs will continue to explore the possibilities of finding the right solution for the promising young defender.
