Sir Alex Ferguson boldly predicts Cristiano Ronaldo's international future after Euro 2024

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson believes Euro 2024 could be Cristiano Ronaldo's last international tournament as the 39-year-old will soon succumb to the physical demands of playing at an advanced age.

Although Portugal have reached the quarter-finals of this summer's competition, Ronaldo's time in Germany has not been good at all. The 39-year-old was left in tears after seeing a late penalty saved and was accused of dragging his team down – a similar narrative towards the end of his second season with United.

Ronaldo's manager for six seasons at United, Ferguson confidently dismissed the player's participation in the 2026 World Cup.

Talking to SPORT BILDThe 82-year-old said: “I can't see that [Ronaldo will play in 2026].

“Football will become much faster and more athletic in the coming years. In addition, the space for center forwards will be smaller.

“Compared to defenders, it is very difficult for strikers to play at a high level when they are older.

“One or two titles won't mean much to him [already] he had a unique career. He's one of the greatest”

In a moment of reflection earlier this week, after Portugal's penalty shootout win against Slovenia, Ronaldo said RTP Desporto: “Without a doubt the last Euro [for me]yes of course.

“But I have no feelings about that. Everything about football affects me, the passion I have for this game, the passion I see from the fans, having my family here, the love of the people… I am leaving the world of football. What else can I do or win?”

“The most important thing about the trip I've taken is the motivation I still have for being here.

“For 20 years I have been representing and playing with the national team, bringing happiness to people, my family, my children, that is what inspires me the most.”

Speaking while missing Slovenia, Ronaldo added: “It's football. Those who fail are those who try, too. I'll do my best to get this shirt, whether I fail or not.

“As you saw, I missed the penalty but I wanted to be the first to score [in the penalty shoot-out] because you have to commit when the team should. Don't be afraid, I've never been afraid to face things head on, sometimes I fix it, sometimes I don't, but giving up is something you won't hear in my name.”
