NHL Rumors: Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Dallas Stars

Suits Winnipeg Jets RFA forward Cole Perfetti

Murat Ates of Athletic: The Winnipeg Jets still have work to do this offseason. Rutger McGroarty may be traded. Outfielder Cole Perfetti needs a new contract and it will be interesting to see what he gets after sitting out the bench for the third season and being a healthy scratch.

The Jets lost Sean Monahan and Brenden Dillon in free agency. They have $9.5 million in cap space and RFAs Perfetti, Ville Heinola, Logan Stanley and David Gustafsson who need new deals.

Gabriel Vilardi's two-year, $3.4 billion hit would be a good thing for Perfetti. Shane Pinto's two-year, $3.75 million is another charge. On the long-term side of things, Anton Lundell signed a six-year, $5 million AAV in the tax-exempt state of Florida.

A bridge and a long-term contract could lead to $7 million per season if he becomes a top-six pitcher. If it's long gone now and there's no bridge, it could be in seven years, $6 million.

Chris Tanev was given some money but… Jani Hakanpaa and David Kampf's knee

Nick Kypreos of the Toronto Star: The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenseman Chris Tanev to a six-year, $4.5 million deal. Many teams were willing to give Tanev a short term but high salary.

  • The Dallas Stars' best offer to Chris Tanev was three years at $5 million per season.

The Leafs also signed 6′ 7″ defenseman Jani Hakanpaa to a two-year, $1.5 million per contract. Steve Simmons reported that Hakanpaa has bad knees and may not play again. A Dallas source said the Stars wanted to re-sign Hakanpaa but his “deteriorating knee” turned them away. The Maple Leafs medical staff looked at his records and they were fine with the Leafs pursuing him.

The Leafs may have 'cut bait' on forward David Kampf. Is Fraser Minten ready to take on the role of scouting Kampf or are they looking outside the organization?
