Luke Shaw reveals whether he could start England's Euro 2024 semi-final
Luke Shaw has insisted he is fit enough to play 90 minutes for England in their Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday.
The Manchester United defender made his five-month return to action in their quarter-final win over Switzerland, coming on in the 78th minute and playing in extra time.
As the only left-back in the squad, Shaw's comfort on the wing has had a clear impact on England's performance and many fans have now called for manager Gareth Southgate to start Shaw on Wednesday.
Asked if 90 minutes was possible for him, Shaw told reporters: “Yes, it is. I think I am. [fully fit]. But obviously that depends on Gareth's decision about what he does, but the way I feel, I feel fit and ready to go.”
Shaw continued: “The last four months have been very difficult. I think obviously, at first I was expected to come back early but, you know, I've been through a few obstacles, to be honest. But I'm honest. here now and it was really nice to come in another night.
“I've been itching to get minutes. It's been a long time but I'm very happy that I was able to get on the pitch and get minutes, and now I hope to get more in the next game.”
Shaw went on to admit that a slight setback in training earlier this summer has left him fearing he will miss the whole of Euro 2024.
“I've worked hard to get to where I was and to do something like that, I was worried,” the United defender continued.
“But I had a scan and it wasn't too bad so it was just a little bit. I knew there was still a chance to come back and play later in the tournament. I was in training. I actually stretched to be at my best. The truth was it was small and I'm here now.”
