Spanish star Yamal could be a 'sporting giant' – De la Fuente

Spain's Lamine Yamal could be a “good game”, La Roja coach Luis de la Fuente said after the 16-year-old scored a stunning goal against France to help his country reach the Uefa Euro 2024 final.

Yamal broke Pele's record as the youngest goalscorer in a major tournament with the equalizer at Munich's Allianz Arena, curling in from outside the area to equalize for Spain in the 21st minute.

Dani Olmo scored the winner four minutes later but Yamal's two assists and goals in his first Euro took the Player of the Match titles.

Lamal: Spain 'must help' midfielder

“He looks like a very experienced player,” said De la Fuente. “I'm happy to be in our team and I hope we can enjoy him for years to come.

“Lamine is doing things that give indications that he might be a great player but we have to be careful. We have to help him by keeping his feet on the ground and develop him in the best possible way.”

Randal Kolo Muani had given France the lead in the eighth minute before Yamal equalized and Dani Olmo fired home four minutes later.

Yamal will turn 17 on Saturday, a day before Spain bid to record a seventh victory at Euro 2024 against either England or the Netherlands in the final at Berlin's Olympiastadion.

Lips of Yamal

The Barcelona midfielder is a game away from winning the second major trophy of his career, as he is the Liga champion with Barca in 2022/23.

De la Fuente said that managing Yamal well would involve “calm and peace”. “In Ancient Rome, when they talked about Caesar they said: 'Remember you are mortal!'” added the 63-year-old.

Yamal called reaching the final a “dream come true”, adding that the moment his first Euro goal went in was “pure joy”.

“I am happy that we have entered the finals but we have not yet done the most important thing which is to win this,” he said. “There have been difficult times for us.

“None of us expected him to admit that so soon. When you reach the finals, you have to play on par with the best. We will wait and see who we get.”
