Palmer urges England to 'finish the job' against Spain in final

Cole Palmer has urged England to “finish the job” and change their lives forever by winning the Euro 2024 final against Spain on Sunday.

The Three Lions reached their second consecutive Euro final with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Palmer came off the bench to provide the assist for Ollie Watkins' 90th minute winner for Dortmund.

A final day now awaits Gareth Southgate's men in Berlin on Sunday as they look to secure their first major tournament victory for the men's team since 1966.

“Everyone is in awe,” Chelsea midfielder Palmer told England's YouTube channel. “Last night on the bus, they were playing songs, [in the] locker room, everyone was just having fun.

“But obviously it's a short change and it's a big, big game to change our lives, our family's lives, and make everybody proud. That's what we're trying to do.

“I think if you ever get to the finals you should hopefully get the job done.

“It's good to get to the final, and you have to enjoy it because you don't get many moments to enjoy yourself.

“But, no, everyone wants to win so bad.”

Palmer is making his first international appearance but was part of the side that beat La Roja to win the European Under-21 Championship 12 months ago.

And with England hitting their stride after a slow start to the tournament this summer, the 22-year-old hopes the senior side can emulate the boys.

“In the first few games we didn't play as well as we could and everyone knew that,” added Palmer.

“But now I think as the tournament goes on, especially yesterday, I think we had our best game in the tournament, and that's what you want us to go to the next stage.

“It's big. We played with them last year in the Under 21 final, England against Spain.

“Even that was a big game, so I can't think about it.”

Palmer also maintained the admiration of manager Southgate and the positive environment he created within the club.

“I just think about the unity that all the players have, he is the one who created that,” he added.

“It's our first tournament and we can see how close the boys are and stuff like that.

“The time he puts into the boys to make us better in games.”
