Teddy Sheringham backs Man Utd to sign 'exciting' £80m England star
Everything will go for Manchester United this summer. Erik ten Hag has signed a new deal, Dan Ashworth has finally arrived and Sir Jim Ratcliffe will begin his first transfer window as club owner.
So, where are they looking to hire? Of course, they started by fixing the defense, an area that became a big problem last season due to many injuries.
Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez missed most of the season and as a result, had to rely on the likes of 36-year-old Jonny Evans and midfielder Casemiro to fill in.
Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite is a target, although the Red Devils have seen two bids rejected. Matthijs de Ligt may join and a bid has been received from Lille Wonderkid, Leny Yoro. However, he is likely to join Real Madrid, his favorite club.
Are there other places? Well, they may be looking at Newcastle star Anthony Gordon.
The latest on Anthony Gordon at Man Utd
With the PSR deadline looming on June 30, Newcastle were desperately trying to find ways to raise money.
If they don't produce enough profit they will be looking down the Premier League relegation barrel. As a result, they eliminated all options, including the idea of Gordon leaving.
The Englishman was offered to Liverpool but turned it down. Liverpool could still go back to sign the striker but they will face competition.
Reports suggest that he is 'wanted' by Man United and they could sign the player before the window opens.
They will have to pay a premium price, however, for the 23-year-old who is believed to be worth around £80m by Eddie Howe and Co.
So, will he be signing well? Former United hero Teddy Sheringham thinks so.
What Sheringham said about Gordon at Man Utd
Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast this week on behalf of Crypto Sports betting, the former striker gave his verdict on the business the Red Devils could complete this summer.
“I think getting more quality players is what is needed at Manchester United. They have had a lot of very young players in the last few years, and they need leaders now,” Sheringham started.
Asked if the Newcastle gem would be a good signing for Ten Hag, he replied: “Gordon is an exciting young player who gets the crowd on their feet, direct and can cause problems for defenders. He has good Premier League experience so this can help Manchester United as they look to play and do well.”
The Toon star enjoyed a truly successful campaign at St James' Park in 2023/24, scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists in all competitions, a run of form that earned him a place in England's Euro 2024 squad.
Gordon still saw a few minutes of play, against Slovenia in the group stage, something that is hard to believe when you look at some of the performances of Gareth Southgate's team.
That said, anyone who watched the Premier League last season knows what he is capable of and should consider making a move this summer.
With Marcus Rashford's future up in the air after a reported falling out with Ten Hag, his England teammate could take his place.
