Vergil Ortiz Jr. He signed a multi-year contract with Golden Boy before the Sergio Bohachuk Show
Vergil Ortiz will enter the toughest fight of his career with the undisputed backing of his promotional team.
The undefeated contender has extended his current deal with Golden Boy Promotions. The multi-year deal was announced on Thursday, hours before a press conference to officially discuss his clash with Serhii Bohachuk on August 10.
“My resignation from Golden Boy is to show loyalty, said Ortiz. “It shows the confidence we both have in each other that we will both bring success together and rise to the top.
“I want to thank Golden Boy and everyone there for believing in me, my dad for always making sure I'm at my best, my manager Rick for making this deal, and to all my fans who are entering this new chapter. for my work and me.”
Ortiz (21-0, 21 knockouts) will challenge for the interim WBC 154-pound title held by Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KOs). Their verbal confrontation took place on Aug. 10 at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.
The bout is Ortiz's third of the year, his most active campaign since the pandemic began. Ortiz, 26, has fought four times during his 2019 Prospect of the Year run but has endured setbacks to slow his progress.
Nevertheless, he did not lose the support of the promoter who continues to invest heavily in the future.
“There is no fighter who is more dedicated to the sport of boxing than Vergil Ortiz, Jr, and we are proud to re-sign him at such an important time – right before his first shot at a world title,” said the chairman of Golden Boy. and CEO Oscar De La Hoya. “With this signing, Vergil is sending a clear message of his commitment and loyalty to Golden Boy and we will reward that commitment by working shoulder to shoulder with him as he becomes the next star in boxing.”
Ortiz enters the August 10th conference following a first-round knockout victory. He stopped Fredrick Lawson (30-4, 22 KOs) in the opening round on Jan. 6. in Las Vegas.
Thomas Dulorme was dispatched in similar fashion—albeit more convincingly—in their April 27 meeting in Fresno, California.
Both events are shown on DAZN, which will carry the Bohachuk-Ortiz event.
Ortiz has been playing in the broadcast scene. He has either headlined or co-starred in every show since Aug. 2019.
“I am very happy that my son Vergil has retired from Golden Boy; I feel that this is the right place and people to make all his dreams come true,” said father and coach Vergil Ortiz Sr. “I am very proud of my son. It has been a long journey and many people have had a huge impact on my son's life. I want to thank Hector Beltran, Dr. Bautista, Rosario Solis, Robert Garcia, Wayne Maddox, my mom, and Rick Mirigian for everything they have done for us. I also want to give a special thanks to Gene Vivero and the Vivero Boxing Gym. Without him, Vergil and I would not be where we are today. As you look down, Gene, I hope we always make you proud. Finally, I would like to thank my son Vergil Jr. by not giving up on his dreams.”
Added Rick Mirigian, Ortiz's manager: “Let's make it simple, Golden Boy showed Vergil how special he was the only way you can: by writing a big check and signing him to one of the biggest contracts in sports.” He was treated like Lebron James as a free agent and the Lakers stepped up when it counted. Golden Boy believes in himself and if your motivator believes that there is nothing special and motivating. Vergil will be world champion on August 10th and one of the stars for years to come and the future of the sport.”
