Matthijs de Ligt is on the verge of reuniting with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

The defender's days at Bayern Munich appear to be numbered, with the Red Devils making concerted efforts to bring him to Old Trafford.

If De Ligt switches Bavaria to north-west England, what shirt number would he take?

Here's everything you need to know about De Ligt's shirt numbers, the ones currently available at United and more.

Unlike another Dutchman on his way to United this summer (*cough*Joshua Zirkzee*cough*), De Ligt hasn't been too comfortable with the numbers he's worn in his career so far.

When he was a youth player at Ajax, the central defender wore numbers 3, 4 again 6which is normal for a player in his position.

After being promoted to Ajax's senior team at the age of 17, De Ligt was given the no 36 on the fringes of the group, but this was quickly improved and returned to his favorite 4 one year later.

Since then, 4 has been the only number De Ligt has worn at club level, acquiring it when he moved to Juventus in 2019 and Bayern in 2022.

It wasn't always the case with the Netherlands, however, with three numbers worn during his international career – 3, 4 and 14. 3 is now his signature number with Oranje.

De Ligt may be in luck, because as it is, United's number 4 is available. Sofyan Amrabat wore it last season while on loan from Fiorentina, but it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will keep him, and as it stands, the shirt is available.

If it's not 4, then it's De Ligt's number from the Netherlands 3 and free of choice.

Other empty United numbers are 9, 13, 15, 19, 26, 27, 30, 31, 33, 34, 38, 41 again 42.
