Ennis “Played” With Avanesyan, Not Focused On Taking Out Crawford
Promoter Eddie Hearn says Jaron 'Boots' Ennis was fighting David Avanesyan on Saturday night, not trying to beat Terence Crawford by hitting him faster than he has in two years.

Even though Ennis (32-0, 29 KOs) was trying to stop Avanesyan (30-5-1, 18 KOs) faster than Crawford, he did so by stopping in the fifth round in a successful defense of his IBF welterweight title. at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
Fun in the Circle
It took Crawford six rounds to stop Avanesyan on December 10, 2022, and he did it with explosive gloves.
“I think it was the way he did it. Remember he's been out for a year,” Eddie Hearn told the media, in response to Jaron 'Boots' Ennis stopping David Avanesyan sooner than Terence Crawford did in December 2022.
“I have a lot of respect for Avanesysan, he really played with him. “He didn't agree to being hit, but he didn't pay attention to what was coming,” Hearn continued. “He was trying to have fun there. He was trying to get him out of there.”
Boot Ennis was very impressive for settling Avanesyan by fighting him inside, where the opponent wanted to fight in the arenas. While most fighters would choose to fight on their own strength, Ennis let Avanesyan have his way by fighting him throughout the five-round contest, and he came out on top.
Ennis' “Measurement” Self-Assessment
“He was trying to be aggressive, but then again, he had been out of the ring for a year. I think he felt his performance was pretty average, Bots. I said, 'If that was an average performance, you just destroyed Avanesyan. It was one sided. I know Avanesyan was trying. He got a few pieces,” Hearn said.
Avanesyan landed a lot of hard shots on Ennis that would have taken out most fighters with a small chin. After the fight Ennis' lips were swollen from the punches he had taken, it looks like he has been through a lot.
Looking for Stronger Competition
“The problem is far from Stanionis and far from Barrios, I want to see him tested because when he found someone like Shakur because like Shakur fighting these guys is a bit of a waste of time. Who wants to see 120-108 three times for a one-sided win?
The problem is that Mario Barrios and Eimantas Stanionis won't check the Boots Ennis. Even if there is something that will be easier for him than Avanesyan because they are not big punchers.
The only way Ennis will be tested is if he moves up to 154. WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. he's the only welterweight who can test Boot Ennis, but he's Top Rank and might be saving Teofimo. Lopez, one of them.
“So it's okay to exercise, but you have to create big fights so they can define the legacy of those big fights,” Hearn said.
Ennis needs to move up to 154 and 160 if he wants to be tested by anyone. Staying at welterweight and focusing on not challenging the weak champions Stanionis and Barrios will not work.
