PHILADELPHIA – “Big Steppa” stepped up in a big way Saturday night.
27-year-old light heavyweight Khalil Coe delivered a heartbreaking second-round knockout of Kwame Ritter in his first scheduled ten-round bout at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The official stoppage time was 1:59, as referee Ricky Gonzalez stepped in to prevent further damage, handing Coe (9-0, 7 knockouts) his third straight second-round win, and fifth straight stoppage overall .
Coe of Jersey City, NJ used his jab to support Ritter (11-2, 9 KOs) of Baltimore, Md. in the first round. Ritter, 33, who hit the switch, had success landing a jab in the first round by switching to southpaw, but that tactic backfired in the second when Coe hurt Ritter with a straight right hand before dropping him with a left. hook.
Ritter hit the count but was constantly catching Coe with powerful shots, as Coe mixed in left uppercuts and body shots to slow him down. Coe continued to press, the fight being stopped after another right hand sent Ritter flying into the ring.
With the victory, Coe won the WBC USA light heavyweight belt, a small belt that will raise his level with that sanctioning body to 175 pounds. Coe told DAZN analyst Chris Mannix afterwards that he was serious about WBC light heavyweight champion Joshua Buatsi.
Buatsi (18-0, 13 KOs), formerly Coe's stablemate who promoted Matchroom Boxing but is now signed to BOXXER, is scheduled to face Willy Hutchinson on September 21 in London for the interim WBO light heavyweight title.
The loss is the second in a row for Ritter, who dropped a unanimous decision against Dzambekov last year in California.
The fight was part of the DAZN broadcast of the IBF welterweight title between Jaron Ennis and David Avanesyan.
