3 important matches England have lost to defeat in the Euro 2024 final

England's long wait to add another trophy to the men's cabinet continues after they were beaten 2-1 by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

The Three Lions haven't been at their best all summer and were second best against a Spanish side who really deserved to finish the competition with their hands on the trophy.

Here are three important battles that England failed to win in the final.

Nico Williams was a major threat from the opening whistle.

Kyle Walker had a good run at stopping the Athletic Club star and certainly made a real impact in the first half, but those efforts were undone shortly after the restart when Williams opened the scoring for Spain.

England couldn't find a way to stop Williams, who stepped up to the biggest stage.

Harry Kane's disappointing Euro 2024 may end with a share of the Golden Boot, but there's no denying he fell short of expectations here.

Caught off after 60 minutes, Kane didn't give anything away in his time on the pitch as Robin Le Normand proved to be too strong. The Real Sociedad defender was dominant in the air and enjoyed Kane's limited movement.

It was no coincidence that England looked more dangerous when Kane was brought out by Ollie Watkins, whose runs in the back actually caused problems for the Spanish defence.

Dani Olmo roamed the field to try and make things happen, and Declan Rice really struggled to keep up with him.

With Fabian Ruiz and Alvaro Morata helping to split England's central spine, Rice appeared to lack the legs to check Olmo, who linked up with those around him to poor effect.

It was a tactical choice from Spain that ultimately decided the game. England and Rice couldn't figure out how to match the overload in midfield.
