Gareth Southgate's potential destinations – calculated

After 102 games and four internationals, Gareth Southgate has officially stepped down as England manager.

The news comes after Southgate's Three Lions lost their second consecutive European Championship final last weekend – losing 2-1 to a Spanish side who impressed in Berlin.

So, after stepping down from the role he held for eight years, what's next for Southgate?

We've looked at his next potential spots, and rated them accordingly.

Returning to the club where his managerial career began to drag them back to the Premier League?

It would be the stuff of fiction for sure.

Whether it will happen or not, is another matter entirely.

Southgate's reappointment at Middlesbrough – where he spent the first three years of his managerial career – will depend on two things:

1) Current top-flight manager Michael Carrick finally retires from the Premier League.

2) Southgate is happy to step down from Championship football after successfully managing England.

While the former seems likely, the latter calculation may be a misstep. Southgate will, and should, have a high-profile job after taking charge of the Three Lions.

Look, let's call a spade a spade:

Considering how happy Todd Boehly has been since buying Chelsea, we wouldn't be surprised if Enzo Maresca doesn't make it to Halloween in charge of the Blues.

That's no small feat of his managerial ability, that's how Chelsea have performed in recent years.

With that in mind, and with Southgate likely to be a free agent in the Autumn, it wouldn't be surprising if Boehly turned to the former England boss if Maresca gets the boot.

You can guess that Chelsea is the club Southgate ultimately wants to manage after his time in charge of the Three Lions.

Along with the north-east teams, another possible destination would be the rich Newcastle United.

The Magpies have spent a lot of time since the takeover of Saudi Arabia in St. James' Park, and a lot of their business has a distinctly British feel to it – asking Harvey Barnes, Nick Pope, and Anthony Gordon to name a few.

That Britishness can be seen in their choice of manager, as it was Eddie Howe who managed to guide Newcastle to European football after decades of tension.

With Howe now named as Southgate's replacement as England manager, a change could soon take place at Newcastle.

If he were to leave, and if Newcastle wanted to bring in another English manager to replace Howe, Southgate would be the marquee name they could go with.

Ahead of the FA Cup final shock rivals Manchester City, it appeared that Manchester United were preparing to make a move to hire Southgate as their new manager.

Southgate was heavily linked with a United job back in the Spring, thanks in large part to working with INEOS sporting director Sir Dave Brailsford and United's new sporting director Dan Ashworth.

After the FA Cup triumph, INEOS finally opted to offer Erik ten Hag a new deal to stay on as United manager, but if things turn sour in the future it wouldn't be surprising to see Southgate move to the Old. Trafford.

The same 'stopping the ship' job he did with England is definitely needed at Man Utd…

If Southgate wants to jump back into the top tier of international management, there is no better job for him than the United States job.

With the USMNT having recently sacked Gregg Berhalter after another poor international campaign – the Copa America this time around – the North American giants are looking for a new manager.

Considering his pedigree in international competitions and ability to handle the pressure of managing a major national team, appointing Southgate over Berhalter would make a lot of sense.

Having worked for the Football Association for the past 13 years, and enjoyed success in many different roles, it would make a lot of sense for the FA to offer Southgate a new position at the top of the organisation.

Although the role of Men's Technical Director is currently being taken – a position that would suit Southgate better – the FA could play a new role for the now famous Three Lions boss in the leadership team.

After what he has done for a great national team, he deserves it.
