English football was ruined when he took the job in 2016, shortly after the country's infamous Euro defeat to Iceland and the sacking of Sam Allardyce after just one game.
Gareth Southgate's reign as England manager is over…
Two Finals. One semi-final. Is now the right time to go?

Supporting England before Southgate was painful, but under him it has been a joy. It was revealed that he was not the person who ended the years of injury with the cup, but he did in many other ways. If success comes it will be because of his work, not because of his departure https://t.co/bbJWguOKAH

He “won nothing” as England went undefeated against Iceland, a country of 300,000 people, in the competition before taking over. Give it a break

It's been a great ride for all involved over the past eight years. Two finals, a semi-final and a quarter-final in Gareth Southgate's four competitions is a tough act to follow! https://t.co/TKnWGZUfkt

Thank you Gareth Southgate for the memories, you have given me and my son memories of a lifetime
All the best@FA

It brought back our pride and joy in following the national team and gave us great memories.
It was time to move on but he deserves to be remembered as England's most successful manager! https://t.co/x6HGbOjmov

Gareth Southgate has reached more international tournament finals (2) than all England men's national team managers combined (1).
The end of an era.

But should it be held against Southgate that he has never been able to take a skillful lead over the line?
England have announced that Gareth Southgate will be stepping down as England manager
102 games
64 wins
20 pullers
18 defeats
63% win rate
2 grand finals

Southgate has brought back the feeling within England that they can compete for major honours. You can't take that away from him, he did a great job but he should have gained something from the players he has. It was as much a time of change as Euro 2024 implies

So who will take the England job? The FA is working on a replacement.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham: “The process of appointing Gareth's successor is ongoing and we aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible. Our UEFA Nations League campaign starts in September and we have an interim solution in place if necessary.”
— James Olley (@JamesOlley) July 16, 2024
While a few names have already shuffled the position forever.
Best tournament gaffer.
Hire Thomas Tuchel and England will win WC 2026.
– Will (@willreyner) July 16, 2024
Eddie Howe and Mauricio Pochettino.
One will be the manager of England. The other will be the manager of Newcastle United.
If you put two and two together that means.

And what's next for Southgate himself? Will he return to the club management or is there something else waiting for him?
Southgate will be Man Utd manager in November.

I hope to god that Maresca is everything our owners believe him to be because I wouldn't put it past hiring Southgate one day. #CFC #Chelsea #ChelseaFC

He completely gives Southgate the job behind the scenes. You cannot lose the understanding you have gained. Small gains like penalty kicks have been a different animal under him.
— Tom (@TomFoins) July 16, 2024
But for now, let's take a moment to appreciate the work Southgate has put in and the massive work he's done to rebuild the Three Lions.
For Colombia's penalty win, for Kieran Trippier's free-kick, for beating Germany at Wembley, for making Harry Maguire a national hero, for beating Luke Shaw, for beating Wales in Qatar, for Jude Bellingham's overhead kick, for Ollie Watkins. , for Cole Palmer's level.
It was one hell of a ride.
Thank you Gareth Southgate. The defense isn't popular, but it got results and made for some amazing moments and memories. The most successful manager in my life.
I will never forget the penalties in Colombia. You dance around the streets of Vienna with strangers singing…
– Adonis Storr (@theadelites) July 16, 2024
Tunisia won in the last minute and Colombia won on penalties in 2018. Germany and Denmark matches in 2021. Bellinghams top kick, Swiss penalty win and Watkins' last minute goal. And of course the principles of Shaw and Trippier. I can't thank Southgate enough for his efforts
