The Chris Johnston Show: Chris Johnston is asked if Mitch Marner will start the season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and how things might play out this year.

Julian McKenzie: “Your next. Leafs fans will be interested in this one. Will Mitch Marner start next season in Toronto?”
Johnston: “Yes. I mean, I think I already said it's more likely than not. I just don't see a trade coming but who knows? Obviously I don't, I can't say with 100% certainty, but it sounds like he's starting next season in Toronto.”
McKenzie: “Okay. So…”

Johnston: “I don't know what's going on right now. I don't know if they are signing an extension. I don't know if we are talking about him being traded, being sold at some point. But I think you know, it has happened that there have been exchanges after this point of that importance, but it is rare. “
McKenzie: “Okay, okay. You heard it here.”
Johnston: “And he wants to play in Toronto. So I say,”
McKenzie: “That too.”
Johnston: “And you have a no-movement clause. So I think everyone should start getting used to that. And we'll probably be talking about it in the next eight to 10 months.”
McKenzie: “But like, I'm surprised, like, obviously people are going to hate this because they feel the way they feel about Mitch Marner. I wonder how Mitch feels about the fact that yes, you would want to play in Toronto, but there are a lot of people out there who don't really want you to be there. And I wonder how that manifests itself in the regular season with their fans. I want to know how that plays out.”
Johnston: “True, but Mitch has been around, he's been around long enough to know how fickle fans can be in both directions.”
McKenzie: “Yes.”
Johnston: “And I'm sure it's on his mind, I'm going to play so well they have nothing but love for me.” I'm not saying that people don't like him. I don't do that, I think he has become the lightning of this whole group.

Of course, but as a group failure, right? Of course, like the Leafs' inability to advance for a long time in the playoffs, Mitch Marner is sure to have a hand in it, but so do Austin Matthews, John Tavares, Morgan Riely, Sheldon Keefe, Kyle Dubas. You know, I think we're going to say Brad Treliving even though he's only been around for one year.
But like, it's not the fault of one player or one person. But he's like being a certain type, a lot of energy is going towards him this time. But I can just say that all I think is that I think people want Toronto is a team, that wins.
As I think it will all be forgotten, like Ken Holland who took a lot of arrows for several years and Edmonton. I didn't hear anyone complaining about Ken Holland in that cup. And I'm not saying, I'm not saying it's all smooth sailing and there's still somebody who might point to the Jack Campbell contract they just bought or whatever. But if you won, it doesn't matter how you got there.
So I would guess without talking to Mitch, his focus is on having a good season. You know, getting to work under Craig Berube. And if the Leafs win, all the noise will be just that. Just, just, it was, it's all a build up to the big moment. Which is not to say that I predict the Leafs will win. But if you're a team player, like you, that's your goal. That's what you work for.”
