Scotty Cameron B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters
Scotty Cameron
Master craftsman Scotty Cameron is always thinking of ways to innovate. But that doesn't mean he's against accepting the past. The latest B3 Triple Black Design balanced putters perfectly walk the line between past and present by combining classic head shapes with modern twists.
Golfers familiar with Cameron's creations will immediately recognize several heads returning to the field: Santa Fe, Catalina and Newport 2 Long Neck. If you grew up around the game in the late 1990s and early 2000s, these words evoked a lot of anger.
Although the names are familiar, Cameron and Austie Rollinson, senior director of putter R&D, combine subtle shapes from existing Super Select profiles and formats to bring them into the present.
“With the B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters, we are offering players new designs based on our Super Select profiles and formats,” said Rollinson. “The Newport 2 has always been a very popular model, and with the Santa Fe, Newport 2 Long Neck and Catalina models, we are introducing playable options not found in the current line. Golfers have the opportunity for a game design that is long, refined and made with our modern milling and manufacturing processes.”
For example, the Newport 2 is “modeled after the cool, mechanical shape of the Super Select Newport 2,” while the Long Neck features the I-beam style neck currently found on most Super Select putters. Even the Catalina got a makeover in the form of a slightly wider shape that closely resembles the Super Select Newport Plus.
Staying true to the Triple Black name, each 303 stainless steel head receives a black PVD treatment designed to reduce glare. The top row is manually fogged and the face is manually masked before application. The chrome shaft also comes in the same Tour Black finish to complete the black finish.
Each face undergoes a double-grinding process, inspired by the Tour, which combines the softness of deep-grinded putters with the consistency and response found in mid-range deliveries.
“Our Triple Black putters have always been a popular choice on Tour with players who not only like a subtle, sleek design, but also want an additional solution to reduce glare,” said Cameron. “We created the B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters to give dedicated golfers a tour-quality feel in a classic four-way configuration.”
The loft in each model is 3.5 degrees with a lie angle of 70 degrees. Variable heel and toe weights can be found on the sole as well. Catalina uses 10-gram, 15-gram and 20-gram stainless steel shafts, while other brands use heavy tungsten in 30-gram, 35-gram and 40-gram denominations to match the putter's length ( -33-inch, 34-inch and 35-inch).
Available July 26, Scotty Cameron's B3 Triple Black is for sale $750 and comes standard with a black Pistolini Plus grip and custom designed B3 cover.
B3 Triple Black Designs
B3 Triple Black Design LTD Newport 2: The flagship model of the B3 Triple Black LTD line, the Newport 2 is modeled after the cool, performance Super Select Newport 2. The B3 Triple Black LTD Newport 2 is offered in both right and left hand models.
B3 Triple Black Design LTD Newport 2 Long Neck: A long I-beam-style neck is added to the Super Select Newport 2's standard head shape, which improves direct-to-direct control through the stroke by using a more balanced near-face setup.
B3 Triple Black Design LTD Santa Fe: Inspired by the popular model from Scotty's early days, the Santa Fe features an I-beam flare 1.5 neck style and shape based on the soft, rounded features of the Super Select Newport. The 1.5 flare neck setup and Newport style headstock are currently only available on the Tour.
B3 Triple Black Design LTD Catalina: The Catalina, inspired by the Classic X, has a slightly wider shape than the standard Newport and is closely related to the Super Select Newport Plus. Instead of matching the double-bend shaft of the Classic X, the updated setup features a shaft-over-spud design and a modern single-bend shaft, giving the player a more balanced performance.
