Scheffler's Rust, MacIntyre's Celebration | Seen and Heard at the Opening

The first round of the Open Championship is upon us. For us golf fans, that's reason to be happy. For another competitor this week at Royal Troon, the celebration has been going on since Sunday afternoon.

“When you get moments like that, that's a childhood dream and a lifelong goal, and you have family and friends that have supported you since you were a little kid, I think it was okay to screw up,” Robert MacIntrye. he said of his celebration after winning the Scottish Open at the weekend. “I think we did a good job with that.”

Will the hangover last this week? That remains to be seen. But after a win like the one MacIntyre produced, there's nothing wrong with a little over the top celebration.

For others in the field this week, they hope to repeat the MacIntyre celebration later this week. Among the hopefuls is world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who is looking to become the first player since Brooks Koepka in 2018 to win as many medals in a single season. If Scheffler is to lift the Claret Jug at the end of the week, he will have to find his form while shaking off a little rust.

“The age-old question in pro golf: rest versus rust,” says GOLF.com editor James Colgan. “Scheffler has been playing on both ends this year. He showed up at the US Open and had his worst start in 600 days, and after that he said that for the most part he felt tired from the start of the season.

“Now he's here at the Open Championship a few weeks ago and he hasn't played in any tournaments. He skipped the Scottish Open last week and is now facing a very different style of golf. A very unique style of golf. Especially the more unique style of putting than before. It will be interesting to watch this week.”
