'ECCO nails it again' – Road test of a great BIOM TOUR shoe

Released in late 2023, the ECCO BIOM TOUR shoe is already a favorite among golfers – and it's easy to see why.

The shoes slide easily on your feet, the fit is great, the luxurious leather is waterproof and the lacing feels impressive.

dd with a smart-yet-casual look and ECCO has nailed it again.

Let's dive a little deeper into the back story of the shoe and our response to testing it.

Science

ECCO is a Danish company, and while the marketing spiel comes in English, there is little sense that you need to translate it.

What does BIOM mean, for example? Is it a word or an acronym?

In fact, it simply refers to the manufacturer's idea that it is important to create a shoe with the natural movement of the foot at the forefront of their vision – they call it BIOM natural movement technology.

It makes for a shoe that looks closer to the fairways and greener than other shoes. ECCO explains that “the low-to-the-ground construction and stability provide forward momentum and power during every swing and step on the course”.

In addition, ECCO's FLUIDFORM Direct Comfort Technology proves two things.

First, they really like the CAPS LOCK button.

And secondly, there is a distinctly improved feel thanks to the fluid injected, molded foam midsoles that produce a comfortable fit and allow a close-to-the-ground aspect.

The eight Pivix spikes are supported by extra grooves on the sole which is a bit reminiscent of old football boots.

The waterproof membrane on the unique ECCO leather produces a great look and feel.

There is also a removable and washable Ortholite insole that provides long-lasting cushioning.

Testing

It's easy to curse with a golf shoe.

My last pair was an impulse buy and I've regretted the decision ever since. The look annoys me, the feel isn't good – my game is clearly disturbed by them.

My ECCOs join me in a double-headed task.

It started with the last two days of the Amateur Championship, taking in the test lanes and dunes of Ballyliffin. The first day it was wet (but my feet were dry); the second day is amazing, with a significant dune wash required (the grip was excellent).

The testing was rigorous and ECCO's ideas for echoing the natural movement of the foot were immediately apparent. I felt connected to the ground and only the soft, light PHORENE provided bounce and strength.

Then it was my turn to hit the balls and I remained a fan. My feet felt great throughout the 18 holes, the ground connection gave me confidence over the ball, any hanging lies were a doddle for excellent grip.

No more excuses from me. Old shoes are thrown in the back of the garage.

ECCO BIOM TOUR is fully suitable for cap locks.

They are SO GOOD.
