After two rounds at treacherous Royal Troon, only 10 players have red numbers, and the former Open champion stands alone atop the leaderboard.
Shane Lowry, the 2019 Open winner, battled a wayward double bogey to shoot a one-under 69.
His closest rivals with 36 holes to play are Justin Rose and Daniel Brown at five under, but Scottie Scheffler is hiding at two under. The action continues on Saturday morning.
