The fight between Gervonta 'Tank' Davis and Vasily Lomachenko is now off the table until 2024. Had the fight gone through, it would have taken place in November with Tank's WBA and IBF lightweight titles at stake for Lomachenko.
According to ESPN's Mike Coppinger, IBF lightweight champion Lomachenko has decided to sit out the rest of the year, leaving WBA 135-lb champion Tank David needing to find an opponent for his next fight in 2024.
As Steve Kim reported, Lomachenko's manager, Egis Kimas, said Loma is not ready to fight. He does not say when he will receive that encouragement, but he is not yet “in the mood” to fight.
Gervonta's options for the next battle:
- Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz: He is scheduled to defend his WBA light welterweight title against Jose 'Rayo' Valenzuela on August 3. If Cruz gets a fight against Tank, it could lead to their clash in 2021.
- William Zepeda: Undefeated, top ranked lightweight contender. Zepeda is ranked #1 among all four sanctioning bodies in terms of being a lightweight. It's a dangerous fight of Tank against a guy who is not popular with the general boxing fans.
- Shakur Stevenson: WBC lightweight champion Shakur has campaigned for a fight with Tank. Stevenson is not popular and has a reputation for being a bad runner. He is a free agent and is likely to work with Matchroom.
Heavyweight boxing fans would love to see Tank Davis fight WBC champion Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs), but the pros won't be happy about that matchup. Shakur is not popular, has a soft fighting style, and is not an easy listen. He brags and says the same thing in different conversations without kissing things up.
Given that Tank already beat Pitbull Cruz and has a fight scheduled for August 3rd against Rayo Valenzuela, he's not a good option for November.
William Zepeda would be the best choice to attract casual and die-hard boxing fans because he is ranked #1 in all four sanctioning bodies, is undefeated, unscheduled, and has the most entertaining style of the three.
