Man Utd 'planning hijack' of key Bayern Munich target

Manchester United are looking to overtake Bayern Munich deliver to Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Xavi Simons, said a report from France.

The 21-year-old Simons enjoyed an impressive loan spell with RB Leipzig last season, scoring 10 goals and 15 assists in 43 games, and has maintained that form this summer at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands.

Bayern are known to be interested in getting Simons' deal over the line, but the French publication L'Equipe now they say they will have to avoid competing with United to do that.

United reportedly failed in a €50m bid for Simons last summer and are back to try to lure the Dutch midfielder to Old Trafford for a second time of asking.

United and PSG have already held lengthy talks over a move for another midfielder, defensive-minded Manuel Ugarte, who is valued at more than €60m (£50.6m).

Reporter for Sky Sports Germany Florian Plettenberg claims Simons has been identified as a target for Bayern in the remainder of the summer transfer window, while Rennes youngster Desire Doue is currently seen as a possible move.

Bayern are trying to secure a deal this summer but could also consider waiting until 2025, when negotiations could be easier.

Simons' former employers, PSV Eindhoven, should have a share of any sale if Simons leaves the club this summer, and a move in 2025 would not involve the Dutch side, so selling in 12 months could be very attractive to PSG.

As for United, their focus is still believed to be on Simons' team-mate Ugarte, who has agreed personal terms with the Red Devils, and centre-back Matthijs de Ligt. A deal for Lille youngster Leny Yoro was completed on Thursday, but manager Erik ten Hag is expected to strengthen his options following the departures of Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala.
