BRAD Pauls he is the new British middleweight champion after standing Nathan Heaney in the 12th and final round of a thrilling home battle.
Headlining the Resorts World Arena, Birmingham, the fight continued where it left off in March when Heaney retained his title in a draw. Heaney's jab was effective early here as Pauls was controlled in the area.
Brad needed a change of pace and got it in the fourth round as a lazy jab from Heaney was met with a thunderous right hand to the chin. Heaney smiled but got a count from referee Kevin Parker as he found his feet.
Heaney was throwing hard in the seventh but looked tired in the tail of the eighth. He regrouped and had two good laps late in the race.
Pauls responded with a very productive 11 and continued that momentum into the final round, piling on the pressure. Heaney rocked and rocked against the ropes, Pauls sensed his time had come and the Newquay man summoned every last bit of energy, forcing Michael Alexander to come in at 54 seconds of the 12th round.
Referees are Victor Loughlin, Kieran McCann and Bob Williams.
It brought tears to the eyes of the new champion who improved to 19-1-1 (11 KOs) and credited coach Terry Steward for sticking with him.

Suffering from his first defeat, falling to 18-1-1 (6 KOs), Heaney left the ring with his team as his Stoke faithful sang out a tough competition.
For the supporting cast, Andrew Cain sent with malice Ashley Lane winning the British and Commonwealth Bantamweight titles. Lane took the fight to Cain which was a reckless move and failed to succeed.
Cain's shot selection, especially down the stretch, made the difference. Losing Ionut Baluta did not affect him at all. The Liverpudlian looked calm, composed and picked all the right shots at the right times.
Ekow Essuman he knocked Owen Cooper I am out of the 10th round of the thriller. Essuman had Cooper down and in deep trouble before the tide turned dramatically in the bottom of the ninth. Cooper put Essuman down with a big right hand and it looked difficult to finish the job in the final round.
Nottingham's Essuman had other ideas and landed a left hook that started the blitz to end the fight. It was a great back and forth action.
