Blake Wesley on Chris Paul: 'For him to be my partner is kind of crazy'

Blake Wesley, a third-year guard for the San Antonio Spurs, has seen growth and development over the past few seasons as he patiently waits for his chance. Standing at 6-foot-4, Wesley's combination of speed, skill, and defensive acumen positions him as a potential player for the Spurs.

Wesley spent his early years in the Association alternating between the San Antonio Spurs and their G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs.

In an interview with HoopsHype, on behalf of Herbalife, Wesley talked about his journey, his joy in learning from Herbalife. Chris PaulSpurs are a dark horse team and more.

BW: Special. Because when I was their age, I didn't get to go to a pro camp or have an NBA player at a camp. I recently visited the local Boys and Girls Club and had a great basketball camp. So, for them to be able to see me and get me to put my name out there is very important to me, especially since I come all the way to Minnesota. So yes, I enjoy myself.

BW: It's crazy. I mean, I'm from a small town in South Bend. It's different, really. It's a small town, and there's not much exposure there. But I'm very blessed to be in this opportunity to be in the NBA. As a young South Bend kid growing up, I was very blessed. I want to thank God every day for putting me in this position. And yes, I can honestly say that I am blessed.

BW: Definitely. The game is going downhill for me. The older I get, the more reps I get. I played in the G League a few games, 10 games, and then there was one spark game I had with San Antonio. I never looked back. I continued without looking back. Going to the G League, I got better with a new coaching staff and new players. So I really appreciate that. My strengths are my speed, getting down, finding guys, making open shots, and playing defense. So, I'm just trying to play my part.

BW: I'm happy, man. He is a great guy. I just worked. We just worked with him not long ago in the Summer League. Yes. So it's good. He is a great guy. He talks to me, coaches me, tells me to go and carry the ball. So I'm enjoying it so far, and I can't wait to read and find out. Really take what he has. So I'm happy.

BW: Yes, for sure. I miss him too Blake Griffin from 'Lob City'. Chris Paul he's one of my favorite people growing up, so to have him as my partner is crazy. I remember when he and Griffin went live. I'm excited for this year, I'm looking to move forward, get more wins, and be a winner.

BW: I feel like we're going to surprise a lot of people. We still have a lot of doubters and sleepers. So we want people to sleep on us because it will only encourage us, especially me. We just got Victor, Harrison Barnesagain Chris Paul. We've added some vets to the team, so we're looking for them to be good this year.

BW: I just do my part, I don't do much, I put in the work so that the work can be seen regardless. So playing my role, hitting open shots, not trying to do too much. And yes, mostly defense. I like to play defense. That's my first thing.

BW: Definitely. He has always been a defensive coach. I felt that before I got to the league, so my mindset when I first came in was to play defense, and I was going to go down. That's what I did when I started playing. He started playing defense and just making the right reads. But the first thing I'm going to get into this year is playing defense and making plays. So that's the main focus.

BW: Everyone on an NBA team was at least the main guy on their college team. So it's a learning process, definitely a rebuild. As soon as I entered, I was drafted. Then I saw Dejounte Murray trade. I was like, 'Oh, I think we're going to go back and rebuild.' I think they are rebuilding. So it's fun. It's nice to get together, get the guys together, practice, train together to build that bond. And then, hopefully, one of these years, we'll win the championship.

BW: It's definitely a concern. You can play well, play poorly, play mediocre, and still be traded. It's all business. That's why I sit ten toes down every day. I work hard and just do the right thing, so I'm ready for everything.

BW: You have to watch people. You have to watch who you are around. I often watch Trey Jones. You are carrying yourself really well. He has a wife and children. He carries himself well. He is a good person to talk to, a good person to be with. So, I try to match myself with him, sometimes off the court. Davonte Graham, again. Although he is not with us, he is a great person and a good role model for me, he helped me throughout this process while he was with us. So yes.

BW: It has changed a lot. I changed my ways with people. You can't let everyone in your life and circle. You have to have a small circle because people want to see you lose; people want to see you win. People hate you one day and love you the next. So I'm just trying to stay close to God, close to my family, close to the people who have been with me since day one, not just because I'm in the NBA. People come to my house and spend time with my family and me. So, I stay close to those people and I don't let outside noise enter. I behave like that.

BW: My GOAT Michael Jordan just because of the things he does.

BW: My top five of all time is Michael Jordan on the other, Kobe Bryant both, LeBron James of three, Kevin Garnett of four, too Bill Russell out of five.

BW: I had the Herbalife Extravaganza, and for the first time, they put me in the clinic again Joel Bonusar. Yes Yes. A hundred and more children spoke about nutrition. He had a basketball skills clinic, played slow 101, did shooting drills, and recently gave back to the community. I mean, that's who I am. I like to give back to the community because I have been in their shoes before. So, giving back is really good for me, and I'm enjoying myself today.
