Bruce Carrington is not recommending Gervonta 'Tank' Davis fight Shakur Stevenson next in a lightweight unification fight because of the low interest the fight would have.
Featherweight Carrington says boxing fans won't be excited to see the next Tank-Stevenson because of Shakur's final fight against Artem Harutyunyan on July 6 on ESPN. The fight was not good, similar to Shakur's last fight against Edwin De Los Santos last November.
Another problem is that Stevenson is not well known to the general boxing fans at the moment. Although die-hard fans know Shakur for who he is, many dislike his fighting style, viewing him as 'boring' and not worthy of the Saturday night slot to watch him perform.
Carrington feels that for a fight between Gervonta and WBC lightweight champion Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) to be big, Shakur needs two impressive victories to come “in a row” before the fight between him and Tank is sold.
“Right now, no. I feel it because these boys are young. They have time to build it up, and because of the way the audience was reacting to Shakur's last performance, there is little excitement,” said Bruce Carrington speaking to MillCity Boxing about whether Gervonta Davis should fight Shakur Stevenson next.
“For it to be big again, Shakur has to make it fun to at least play in a row.”
The downside of Tank Davis not fighting Stevenson next is that he may continue to underperform, which will reduce the low interest fans already have in that matchup.
It would make sense for Baltimore native Tank and his management at PBC to delay the fight with Shakur if they believe he can turn things around and look good in his few fights. However, Shakur will not be able to look good and will continue to bore fans for the rest of his career. He's not built to be an exciting fighter.
Well, what Shakur has to do is fight these competitors and be aggressive, stand in the pocket:

- Raymond Muratalla
Shakur needs to show the public that he can beat De Los Santos without moving in the ring, trying to avoid his aggression as he showed it last November. Stevenson blamed his poor performance on De Los Santos for the injury. However, when Shakur chose not to pursue a rematch to prove that he can fight better when he is healthy, fans saw it as a crime that he had never been injured.
Shakur doesn't have the heart to fight fighters like De Los Santos and Jeremiah Nakathilia and never will.
'Tank' Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, needs a good opponent to sell on PPV as Vasily Lomachenko has opted to sit out the remainder of 2024. That was the battle Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) had with his handlers. is slated for a cross-platform PPV event in November.
The best option for Tank Davis to choose for his next fight in November would be the type of fighter that will make everything interesting for the fans. That can be one of two things:
