Joe Joyce vs Derek Chisora will go back to what they were left with, says Dave Coldwell
TRAINER Dave Coldwell believes that Saturday night's heavyweight fight between Joe Joyce and Derek Chisora will be at the right level for each boxer.
The all-British fight takes place at the O2 Arena in London, a venue where Chisora has fought nine times and won in his last five visits.
Chisora, (34-13, 23 KOs), is still in the veteran phase of his career while Joyce, (16-2, 15 KOs), showed in his two losses to Zhilei Zhang and his low wins. against Kash Ali that the end may not be far for “The Juggernaut” either.
Coldwell, who coached Chisora to his stunning victory over Artur Szpilka – at the O2 – in July 2019, gave his thoughts on his previous fight against Joyce on Saturday (July 27).
“Derek said it was his last fight at the O2. “It's going to be a good night for him,” Coldwell said Debate News.
“I know you love that place. The fans love him there. They always turned on him there. I hope you get a really good reception.
“In the war, it's about who got what's left. I think that's what it comes down to. Whoever is left.”
The back-to-back losses Joyce suffered at the hands of Zhang last year were both comprehensive and frustrating in equal measure. But in March the 38-year-old returned to winning ways in the final round against Rotherham's Ali, who lost a six-point decision to Bohdan Myronets before his fight with Joyce.
“A fighter can go at any time, especially if you shoot everywhere in your career,” Coldwell said of Joyce.
“Over time that resistance wears off and once it wears off it rarely comes back. And it's not like he's a fighter with a shield where he can hide that brokenness, that weakness and if that's a weakness he's there to be beaten. He has fought Kash Ali and he didn't look good in that fight either. I'm just wondering who's left.”
