Yudai Shigeoka will be making his first fight as a former titleholder.

The Ring's 5th strawweight contender will next face Samuel Salva of the Philippines on August 24 at the Yamato Arena in Osaka, Japan. Impi will act as ABEMA-TV's chief executive in the already announced Lerato Dlamini-Tomoki Kameda rematch.

Shigeoka (8-1, 5 knockouts) has not fought since a March 31 decision loss to Melvin Jerusalem (22-3, 12 KOs), No. 3 at 105, Nagoya.

The setback ended his brief stay as the WBC strawweight titleholder. Shigeoka dethroned Panya Pradabsri (42-2, 26 KOs), No. 6 for 105, in their title match last October 7 in Tokyo. The 27-year-old southpaw held the interim title before improving on his unanimous decision win over the visiting Thai boxer.

Salva (20-1, 13 KOs) is on track for the first time in his career to make the big jump at the competitive level.

The 27-year-old fighter from Iligan City has only fought in the Philippines throughout his eight-year professional career. His only loss was to Pedro Taduran (16-4-1, 12 KOs) in their vacant September 2019 IBF strawweight title fight.

Taduran, ranked No. 8 at 105, challenges IBF titleholder Ginjiro Shigeoka (11-0, 9 KOs) this Sunday in Otsu, Japan. Ginjiro is Yudai's younger brother and The Ring's No. 1-rated strawweight.

Meanwhile, Salva has won three times in a row since returning to his career. They all went inside the distance but faced modest opposition, although he has a 2019 victory in front-runner Rene Mark Cuarto.

Yudai Shigeoka was The Ring's top-ranked strawweight champion defending his title against Jerusalem, who was holding the title at the time. His explosive run to the top included early wins over contenders Lito Dante and Tsubasa Koura and former WBO titleholder Wilfredo Mendez (19-3-1, 6 KOs), No. 8 out of 105.

However, he suffered two collapses against Jerusalem during a disastrous first half that seemed insurmountable. Shigeoka roared back in the last six rounds, failing to score two out of three points.
