Arsenal's “strong” transfer interest in the La Liga star has been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano
Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Mikel Merino's transfer to Arsenal could be under close scrutiny as he expects there could be progress on a deal by the end of the week.
Speaking on his YouTube channel in the video below, Romano summarizes his current information about the Merino deal, saying that Arsenal's interest is strong, although they are currently focused on completing the signing of Riccardo Calafiori.
Arsenal have yet to make a bid for Merino, who also has fans at Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, but it looks like this is still up for grabs in the coming days…
Merino starred for Real Sociedad in La Liga and the Champions League last season, and also had an impressive Euro 2024 with Spain, although he didn't always get that many chances off the bench.
Given that the 28-year-old is out of contract next year, it is not too surprising that Arsenal and other clubs would see him as an exciting prospect as he will have the chance to leave at a lower market price as Sociedad have won. I don't want to risk losing him for nothing next summer.
Merino transfer: What we have been told
CaughtOffside have received further information on Merino's situation, Manchester United are also understood to be showing an interest, according to our sources with a close understanding of a possible deal.
Arsenal are now looking to move forward with talks over Merino as he emerges as their top target in that defensive role, while Mikel Arteta desperately needs an upgrade from the aging and injured Thomas Partey in that area of his squad.
It will be interesting to see if AFC can now jump in on this potential signing ahead of other top clubs, but it seems there is reason for the Gooners to be optimistic this time around.
