Benavidez Should Give Up Pursuit Of Canelo After Berlanga Fight Announcement
Canelo Alvarez's decision to defend his undisputed super middleweight title against Edgar Berlanga on September 14 should signal David Benavidez to stop looking for the Mexican star.
It is a bitter pill for Benavidez to accept that he was wasting his time hunting Canelo, but he must understand that there are no chances for him. He is not in Canelo's plans.
Mexican superstar Canelo is on his way to retirement and will be fighting certain fights that do not involve opponents he may lose to, such as Benavidez, David Morrell Jr., Dmitry Bivol, or Artur Beterbiev.
Tough decision for Benavidez
David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) was recently extended by the WBC to decide which official position he wishes to hold between 168 and 175. It is clear that Benavidez needs to stop retaining his mandatory WBC. in 168 and make 175 his eternal home.
'Mexican Monster' Benavidez is a must-win for WBC light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev, and will be getting a guaranteed shot at whoever holds that belt after the October 12 undisputed title fight between Artur and WBA champion – Dmitry Bivol.
The money Benavidez could earn from fighting the winner of that fight in Saudi Arabia in 2025 should be enough to keep him happy, as it appears to be his main reason for wanting the Canelo fight.
Benavidez's chances of beating the much younger and older Canelo are much greater than it would be for him to beat the winner of Beterbiev vs. Bivol. But if Benavidez can't get the Canelo fight, what other options does he have?
He kills himself as he struggles to fight at 168 as it is, and he can't keep doing that forever without ending up in the hospital emergency room due to dehydration issues.
The last thing Benavidez needs is to be hospitalized or beaten by one of the super middleweights because he's exhausted from his meltdown from 190 to 168, trying to gain an advantage.
The truth of the Canelo Fight
If Benavidez thinks Canelo will fight him in early 2025 after defending against Berlanga, he is delusional. Canelo is likely to face Terence Crawford in the first quarter of next year, as long as the Honorable Turki Alalshikh sponsors this fight, which he is expected to do.
Benavidez must wake up and realize that Canelo will not give him the fight he has been waiting for for the past six years.
