Ping's PLD Milled SE DS72 Hovland Edition putter
Jonathan Wall/GOLF
Limited editions have grown in popularity over the past few years. In many cases, demand has outstripped supply for these golfers indeed those looking for a putter or a set of irons are left out in the cold.
This real situation played out late last year when Ping released an exact replica of Viktor Hovland's Ping PLD DS72 limited to 100 pieces. The putters go fast, even with the $990 price tag.
Realizing that not everyone had the opportunity to hit a Hovland putter, Ping chose to create another version of the “Hovi” for a wider audience.
The latest PLD Milled SE DS72 Hovland Edition built around Norwegian's signature putter with a $485 price tag.
Even better? The putter will be offered by authorized Ping dealers, which can be sold directly as Hovland Limited since last year. And with a larger number of rounds, there is a good chance that you won't hit this time.
Each special edition putter is precision milled, finished and custom built by PING's Wrx department. The head is milled from carbon steel 1018 and hand finished to a patina finish that was only available on PLD's custom system in the past.
The head weight of 360 grams is the same as Hovland's player. So, too, is the single top-rail sightline and ball-width back-cavity feature. The smooth milled face on the DS72's mid-mallet profile should appeal to golfers who prefer a solid feel.
In a nod to Hovland's love of all things Oklahoma State — he still lives in Stillwater, Oklahoma — the putter is equipped with a black and orange Ping putter grip and protected by, you guessed it, a custom putter cover in the same colors. .
The 35 inch chrome stainless steel shaft has a double-gob designed for those with a straight stroke type. Ping's PLD Milled SE DS72 Hovland Edition putter is available through authorized Ping dealers for $485.
