JAIME MUNGUIA will return to the ring on September 20 but in his corner is a new promoter.
The surprising news, revealed by ESPN, sees the Mexican super-middleweight join forces with Top Rank in a multi-fight promotional deal with Zanfer severing ties with Golden Boy Promotions.
Munguia, who lost last week against his countryman Canelo Alvarez who is the 168lbs champion, will reportedly face Erik Bazinyan on September 20. In another change in his team, the 27-year-old player will no longer be trained by Freddie Roach, instead he will be trained. meet again with coach and former fourweight world champion Erik Morales.
The move will have a huge impact on Golden Boy Promotions and their promoter Oscar De La Hoya who has worked with Munguia since his first world title fight in May 2018. That fourth round win over Sadam Ali gave Munguia the WBO super-welterweight title. championship, his only world title so far in a career that saw him campaign at middleweight between 2020 and 2022.
One of the highlights of Munguia's career came in a win against Sergiy Derevyanchenko 13 months ago in a fight cage. The Tijuana boxer followed that up by knocking out John Ryder in nine rounds in January.
His lone loss came in May when the all-Mexican clash with Canelo passed the undisputed title by unanimous decision that resulted in Munguia dropping in the fourth round.
Top Rank made another super-middleweight move earlier this year when they signed a promotional deal with top contender Christian Mbilli. The Cameroon-born Frenchman stopped Britain's Mark Heffron in one round in May and returned to the ring on August 17 against Derevyanchenko. If Mbilli and Munguia come to their next trials we may see them clash at the end of 2024 or sometime in 2025.
