Jeremy Frimpong's release clause expires

The €40m (£33.5m) release clause attached to Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong's contract has expired, but a move to the Bundesliga could still be on the cards.

Frimpong enjoyed a fruitful campaign with Leverkusen, scoring 14 goals in 47 appearances while playing a key role in helping Xabi Alonso's side claim their first Bundesliga title. The Dutchman was the star of Leverkusen's 51-day unbeaten run last season, attracting the attention of potential suitors across Europe.

The 23-year-old, who graduated from Manchester City's school, may return to England to play in the Premier League. Liverpool and Real Madrid have been linked, while 90 min he understands that Manchester United, former club City and Barcelona are the new homes of this Dutch star.

Frimpong's summer release for a €40m clause has now expired, per the German publication Bild, but that doesn't mean a transfer is completely out of the cards. Of course, all that has changed is that Leverkusen are now in full control of his future and can negotiate a fee on their terms.

The Europa League finalists may opt to keep Frimpong next season, hoping his value and profile will rise over the next 12 months, but they could also look to cash in and spend more time on new signings.

Liverpool, with new manager Arne Slot at the helm, are another club that could still make a move for the 23-year-old before the end of the summer. The Reds are yet to confirm any new signings, but are eyeing Frimpong as a possible replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is also being targeted by Real Madrid.

Man Utd, who have been active in the window and have already confirmed the signings of Joshua Zirkee and Leny Yoro, could be in need of a new right-back as they prepare to seal Aaron Wan-Bissaka's move this summer – the Red. The Devils have interest in him from West Ham United among others.

Premier League champions City could also be looking to bring Frimpong back to the club as they hunt for a long-term replacement for Kyle Walker. 90 min it is understood that internal talks have already taken place to end that, although it remains to be seen whether Walker, who has two years left on his contract, will be the subject of a Saudi Pro League bid.
