Madrimov's Challenge: Crawford & The Canelo Dream
Israil Madrimov says he wants Canelo Alvarez's next fight after defeating challenger Terence Crawford on August 3 in their highly anticipated fight ten days from now at BMO stadium in Los Angeles.
WBA junior middleweight champion Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KO)s) many people jumped the gun, thinking that Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) would beat him and move on to the big Canelo fight in May. 2025.
Fans are so used to seeing Crawford win that they won't think he's losing to anyone, and they'll be shocked if Madrimov starts beating him. I hope they accept the truth and don't cry about being robbed and start pressuring the WBA to order a replay.
Madrimov can be ignored
Unfortunately, fighters have to lose if they stay in the sport long enough, take annual vacations, age, and move up weight classes recklessly based on their desire for increased paydays.
Honorable Turki Alalshikh has not said whether Madrimov can fight Canelo if he wins against Crawford on August 3.
The fact that Turki did not say that Madrimov has an option for Canelo, and, if he wins, suggests that Crawford will only be given the match because he is a star in the US. fight with Canelo at 168.
“They always say Terence Crawford is pound for pound because he goes left and right. He is smart,” said Israel Madrimov speaking to Little Giant Boxing about his upcoming fight on August 3.
If a fighter is inactive and old, like Crawford, you can't put him on the pound-for-pound list because he doesn't fight often enough and hasn't fought anyone dangerous for years.
“Nothing,” Madrimov said when asked what he thought about Crawford wanting to fight Canelo Alvarez next. “We are waiting for August 3 to see who the champion is, then it will be Canelo-Madrimov. It's possible.”
Crawford's Desperate Payday Pursuit
Crawford wants a big payday before he retires. You can't blame him for that. The big money he got from his fights with Errol Spence and David Avanesyan wasted him, and now he wants big money.
Someone who can fight for that money is Canelo. So, it makes sense that he keeps tweeting about that because he's getting out of the game, and he won't be around until he's in his 40s.
He doesn't want to run out of food for young sharks that can chew him up. There are many right now who would eat Crawford, but he will not fight them.
“A lot of people are talking about Canelo-Crawford, but we will fight on August 3. Don't forget. I'm only focused on my game plan, and I'm waiting to show it in the ring. Me too. I can go left and right. I think this fight is very exciting for boxing fans,” said Madrimov.
It must upset Madrimov that the fans and media are already crowning Crawford with the new WBA 154-lb crown, as it is a done deal. People are so used to seeing Crawford win, and they don't take into account the fact that he's been beating ho-hum opposition his entire career.
He's never fought an elite-level fighter, and you don't know what he's going to look like at 37 in a new weight class against a guy who could beat everyone he's ever fought. Top Rank did everything they could with Crawford during the many years they had him, but he didn't fight anyone good during that time. They were always old, shot, or fed on the ground.
“I don't like to say too early [what I’m going to do]. I like to wait until the war to show how we fight,” said Madrimov.
It would be wise for Madrimov to look for a knockout because Crawford will be difficult to defeat by decision. Crawford is the A-side, and the judges are likely to give him all the close rounds because of his star power. Madrimov needs to be aware of that because he will feel bad after that if the cards go down and the judges don't move well.
