Unprecedented scenes at the Olympics as VAR disallows Argentina's goal after 2 hours leading to Morocco's win
The opening match between Argentina and Morocco in the men's football tournament at the Olympics ended in chaos and unprecedented circumstances.
Morocco were leading 2-1 going into stoppage time, but Argentina's Cristian Medina equalized in the 90th+16th minute, raising eyebrows because of the unusually long stoppage.
The referee appeared to have blown the final whistle only after Argentina had scored, leading to much anger from the Moroccan fans.
This incredible equalizer led to the Moroccan fans storming the pitch and throwing objects at the players, forcing the referee to stop the game. The chaotic scene saw both teams rush off the pitch as security worked to contain the situation.
After two hours, the fans left the field, the players were called to finish the game behind closed doors. In an empty field, VAR reviewed Medina's goal and ruled it offside.
After 20 minutes of preparation, the last three minutes of the match were played, with Morocco holding on to win 2-1.
