Jorgensen transfer: Chelsea could sign GK
Chelsea have made a transfer bid for Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, and Fabrizio Romano expects the deal to be around 25-26 million euros.
Specially speaking CaughtOffside in the latest edition of his Daily Briefing column, Romano explained that Jorgensen could come in to challenge Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's new manager, appears to be key to the deal as he is eager for the London giants to bring in a new 'keeper with good distribution of the ball as a key quality, as this is something he really values as part of his tactical plan. .
Maresca did a great job at Leicester City last season, but Chelsea will be a new challenge, so it's important that he gets the players he wants in the transfer market.
According to Romano, it looks like Jorgensen may be on the way to strengthening Maresca's Chelsea squad, with a bid of €20 million made so far, while Villarreal will hold out for a bit more than that.
Jorgensen transfer: Update on Chelsea's bid for a new goalkeeper
“Chelsea had an important day yesterday as they sent an official request to Villarreal for goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen,” said Romano.
“The Danish goalkeeper has a release clause of 45 million euros, but Chelsea have offered 20 million euros, and they feel internally that a deal can be done for something like 25-26 million euros.
“Negotiations are ongoing, but the feeling is good as Jorgensen has agreed personal terms with Chelsea – the salary, the length of the contract, everything is fine.
“The important information is that Jorgensen is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in terms of his ability to distribute, and as I have reported, that is a key skill that Chelsea have been looking for as they are very interested in Enzo Maresca.
“So, it's a work in progress, but Chelsea have entered the race strongly. A deal seems likely, and I would expect Jorgensen to compete with Robert Sanchez for the starting spot. In the end it will be up to Maresca so we will have to see, but we know that he appreciates goalkeepers who distribute well like Jorgensen.”
