Luol Deng, President of South Sudan Basketball, responded to Gilbert Arenas' comments as “disrespectful and cruel”. Deng expressed disappointment rather than anger, especially since the words were coming from respected people.
He emphasized that although he is not affected and is proud to be African, such comments can damage the self-esteem of young African and African-American children who watch the Arenas. Deng highlighted the importance of embracing African history and fighting hatred with pride.
