Spurs Register Interest in Darius Garland and Andrew Nembhard – Basketball Insiders
The San Antonio Spurs are looking to use their roster around Victor Wembanyama as they develop a star center. The team brought in Chris Paul this offseason to be their point guard, but they were reportedly aggressive in pursuing several other guards to join their backcourt. According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the Spurs have reportedly called the Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers about trading for Darius Garland or Andrew Nembhard.
Nembhard recently signed a three-year extension and the Cavaliers now have limited trade talks surrounding Garland. San Antonio knows they need a true point guard to dominate the offensive unit while setting up pick-and-roll situations with Victor Wembanyama. As a result, they were able to sign Chris Paul to a one-year deal.

Spurs are looking to build around Victor Wembanyama
There is no secret yet that Victor Wembanyama could be the future face of not only the Spurs, but the entire NBA. He revealed why he was the best player last season. The French big man showed why the hype surrounding him was well deserved. During his rookie campaign, the French sensation easily took home Rookie of the Year honors by averaging 21.4 points, 1.2 steals, a league-leading 3.6 blocks, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game while shooting 46.5 percent from the field.
The head coach, Gregg Popovich, is a good coach for a young talent like him and will make sure to develop strong players to support Wembanyama. It will start with having a reliable bodyguard. This is a big reason why the team showed interest in young guards in Garland and Nembhard. However, Chris Paul, despite his age, is still a solid consolation prize. Especially when one considers his experience and ability to play with the best point guards in the NBA.
Short Term Solution for Chris Paul
Although Chris Paul is not what he once was, he will still be a good fit for the Spurs. He is still a respected ground general and will be key to Wembanyama's growth. Many speculated that the Spurs could be a dark horse team in the NBA Play-In this coming season. Especially since it's another year under the Black Belt and Popovich is still in charge. Not to mention they are high on their draft pick, Stephon Castle. Considering all of this, the San Antonio Spurs are hoping that their rebuilding phase is nearing an end.
