Pedro Taduran Stops Ginjiro Shigeoka in Round 9, Reclaims IBF Strawweight Title
The revolving door continues in boxing's smallest weight class.
Pedro Taduran became a two-time strawweight champion after a ninth-round stoppage of undefeated Ginjiro Shigeoka. A flurry of punches left Shigeoka defenseless, forcing referee Steve Willis to stop the fight at 2:50 of the ninth round.
With the victory, Taduran reclaimed the IBF strawweight title on Sunday at the Shiga Daihatsu Arena in Otsu, Shiga, Japan.
Shigeoka (11-1, 9 knockouts) entered his second title defense as The Ring's No. 1 measure strawweight. He was hoping to dethrone the title holder and keep at least one belt in the family. Yudai Shigeoka, Ginjiro's older brother, lost his WBC title to Melvin Jerusalem earlier this year.
Instead, another strawweight belt returned to the Philippines. Taduran, number 8 at 105, was dominant from the start, as he deflected Shigeoka's congratulatory attack into his own.
Concerns about Shigeoka's health grew as the fight progressed into the second half. His nose covered in blood and his mouth closed, Shigeoka, 24, had no time to defend against the 27-year-old southpaw.
The fight could be stopped at any time from the seventh round onwards. Taduran closed the show in style as he pinned Shigeoka in the ropes. Left hooks land to the body as Shigeoka spends trying to close. He was finally saved by the referee when Taduran started to celebrate.
Anxiety grew in Shigeoka after he fainted in his corner. He was then taken to the hospital and taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Meanwhile, the night marked the rebirth of 'Kid Pedro Heneral.'
Taduran (17-4-1, 13 KOs) has done a great job as he enters his second title reign. His first reign began with a fourth-round knockout of national champion Samuel Salva in their vacant title fight in September 2019.
One successful defense was not successful. Taduran earned a technical draw with regular Daniel Valladares on Feb. 2020. He lost the belt one year later to Rene Mark Cuarto in their Feb. 2021 all Filipinos. Cuarto did this again one year later, in a technical decision victory on Feb. 2022.
Three wins have now followed for Taduran, none bigger than what he achieved on Sunday.
The fight is broadcast live on Japan's ABEMA-TV.
