Red-hot Hayes seeks Carris Trophy – Golf News
Stockport's Daniel Hayes delivered a masterclass on the final day of the Carris Trophy, as he was crowned at Ormskirk Golf Club.
The England Boys golfer raced out of the blocks early with three birdies in his first four holes, and went on to shoot one-under 67 to contribute to an overall 16 to win by two shots ahead of nearest rival Arthur Carlier of France.
Carlier piled on the pressure with three birdies from holes 8-11, but bogeys at 16 and 18 saw his hopes of victory dashed, despite a good round of 69.
After his win, Hayes, whose home club is Bramhall Golf Club in Cheshire, said: “It's huge. It sounds good. I've had a lot of second place finishes in the last 18 months so it's nice to finally get one over the line.
“I think the key was to keep playing by taking two irons and three woods if you need to instead of the driver, as you can make big scores if you're struggling.
“I probably won't do much to celebrate as I have to head to the English Novice, so I'll get right back to it!”
Another young England Boys, Monty Holcombe (Walton Heath) finished third after an even par final round, finishing -11 overall, while 14-year-old Teessider Thomas Hartshorne bounced back to 4th place to win the Hazards Salver award, introduced to the top under-16 players in Great Britain and Ireland.
In the Nations Cup, England 1, consisting of Hayes, Ben Bolton and Drew Sykes, won the crown, as Hayes and Bolton's scores of 9 and 6 in the first two days counted towards their total of – -15, nine. ahead of their closest competitors (Netherlands 2).
