Promoter Eddie Hearn has voiced his interest in signing free agent Shakur Stevenson. Hearn expressed concern that he would have fights to offer WBC lightweight champion Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs) if he signed with him.
Eddie says he recently met with Stevenson, 27, and his management, letting them know he wants to sign him, but it will depend on “giving him” the right fights.
Shakur's Dream Fights Out of Reach
Given that Hearn can't bring Tank Davis, Vasily Lomachenko, or William Zepeda to Shakur, he has nothing to offer other than 140 fighters, most of whom can beat him.
If Hearn can't get the right fights. Shakur will be stuck fighting his Matchroom battles at age 140, and his career will continue to decline.
At 140, Shakur will be like a fish out of water, forced to run because of his lack of power and offensiveness to the broadcasters. We're talking about the low ratings of Shakur's underclassmen, and Hearn will be crying alligator tears over his mistake in signing him.
Shakur wants it only fight against Gervonta Davis and Vasily Lomachenko, which Hearn can't confirm. Hearn may try to make those fights, but whether he can get anywhere is questionable.
“I met Shakur, Jay Prince, and Josh Duban. They are a great team. It was a really honest conversation, and the conversation was, 'I'd like to sign you,'” promoter Eddie Hearn told iFL TV about his interest in signing free agent Shakur Stevenson to his Matchroom promotion.
Hearn did not sound motivated during the interview when the topic of conversation changed to Shakur. When I looked at Hearn's face, I could see that he did not intend to include Shakur in his team and face the complaint that will come from him if he fails to get him the fights he is fighting to face Tank and Lomachenko.
Hearn looked like he'd just bitten into a lemon, and he didn't like the sweetness. He knows with his years in the game what the outcome would be if he can't get the fights that Shakur sharpens.
“I need to fight the right fights for you, and if I can't fight those fights for you, then maybe I'm not the guy to be with,” Hearn continued of Shakur. “We all agree that for the right fights, I'm the right guy for the job, but I have to fight the right fights.
Lomachenko will not want to fight a fighter like Shakur at his age and be forced to chase him in the ring for 12 rounds. I don't blame Loma at all for turning his nose up when he fought Shakur because he knows what kind of player he is, and he won't want to hear a boost all night from the fans.
“He will be here on Saturday, and so will the rest of the world. If we can work with Shakur, I would love to work with Shakur, but it has to be good for him. It should be good for us too. “For my part, I love being Shakur's promoter because I think he's a great fighter,” Hearn said.
The Danger of Fighting Unhappiness
The last thing Hearn needs is for Shakur to sign and not be able to give him the fights he's asking for. Shakur then turned into a disgruntled, unsatisfied Cancer, venting his displeasure on social media over his mistake in signing with Hearn. It would be pure venom from Shakur, and Hearn will be filled with regret for signing.
If all Hearn has to give Shakur to these heroes, there will be a lot of unhappiness:
– Andy Cruz
– Liam Paro
– Jack Catterall
– Subriel Matias
– Regis Prograis
– Richardson Hitchins
Shakur might lose some of those guys, especially Andy Cruz. 2020 Olympic gold medalist Cruz is a Shakur-like fighter but is more skilled on the offensive side of the game. I think Paro will also beat Shakur to ruin Hearn's signing. Hearn already has a copy of Shakur and Cruz, so why he would need a repeat is unclear.
“The only way I got into the Shakur-Tank deal was because I was working with Shakur, and right now, I'm not,” Hearn said. “Whether he needs me once, he makes that contract, or he signs with PBC, I don't know.”
Shakur doesn't need Hearn to get a Tank Davis fight. Signing with Hearn helps Shakur in the promotion department, where he does a good job of building excitement for his players when he likes them. If Hearn likes Shakur, he's going to do a lot of work to build him into the talks.
“I wouldn't be surprised to see Tank face Shakur because it's fought, and circumstances and conditions are everything,” said Hearn. “So, Tank has all his eggs in his basket for the Lomachenko fight, and that's over. You're left holding your id*** at that point, saying, 'Blimey, who am I going to fight?'
Tank Davis doesn't need Shakur. If that fight doesn't happen, Tank can fight anyone, and he'll do well because he's a superstar.

“Boom, Shakur is a free agent; he's ready to make a deal, and timing is everything,” Hearn said. “So, I won't be surprised. I haven't talked to him yet [Shakur] as I saw him about a week ago, but maybe they are in talks for that fight [with Tank Davis]. If they are there and they haven't signed with PBC, I would like to be part of the team.”
Hearn's Lack of Enthusiasm
Hearn's strength when talking about Shakur reveals that he is not happy about adding him to his team. If you compare that to how Hearn seemed to live when he talked about wanting to replace Jaron 'Boots' Ennis, night and day.
Hearn looked like a kid who just got a favorite gift when he talked about Boot Ennis, and he's nothing like Shakur. He clearly has no intention of adding her to his team, and I can't blame him one bit. Neither will I be.
“If they have, I wish you luck, maybe we will work together in the future. “I hope that Shakur, with or without us, can make fights that will define his history,” said Hearn.
Notice Hearn's attitude? Does that seem like a guy who wants to sign Shakur?
