Liverpool chief executive Hogan says Klopp's exit brings 'opportunity to start fresh'

Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan believes Jurgen Klopp's departure “provides an opportunity for a fresh start”.

Klopp left Anfield after almost eight years in charge at the end of last season with Arne Slot replacing him.

Liverpool also underwent major structural changes with Michael Edwards and Julian Ward returning to oversee the wider football portfolio of Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's marquee name, and Richard Hughes arriving from Bournemouth to become sporting director.

And while it is an unwanted change if they would have preferred Klopp to stay, Hogan insists there are positives to be drawn.

He told the BBC: “It gives an opportunity to restart or reset and maybe look at how things work going forward.

“Jurgen's departure was a tough decision but it was the right decision for him and his family, and therefore the right decision for the team.

“He was clear about leaving the team in a better place than where he found it and I think he has done that. The timing of his announcement gave us the opportunity to do the right process.”

What does Hogan say about PSR rules?

The Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules continue to be a challenge for many clubs – Everton and Nottingham Forest were stripped of points last season and the likes of Newcastle United had to make unwanted sales this summer to avoid sanctions.

Hogan says the core rules “have teeth” but also supports the proposed changes to the current rules, adding: “I think it's important that the rules have teeth and if clubs go against that then the Premier League has a process to go through. We support those laws and being sustainable.

“We are trying to find a better way of working for all of us going forward.

“We have a very competitive and international league, and it is important that we keep it that way.”

Liverpool are currently on tour in the United States and will face Arsenal in Philadelphia on Thursday morning UK time.
