Mikel Arteta reveals if Arsenal will re-sign £100m
Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal do not plan to make another expensive move to sign this summer after breaking their transfer record to bring in Declan Rice last year.
The Gunners brought the former West Ham star to the Emirates Stadium in July 2023 in a deal worth £105m. That move looked very smart during the season, as Rice went on to make 51 appearances and register seven goals and ten assists, declaring himself one of the best players in the Premier League.
However, Arteta does not want to spend that kind of money again and has said he is 'very happy' with the players he currently has.
“We don't expect to do anything like it. That's the truth,” he said during a pre-season trip to the United States. “We have to wait and see the movement in the market, we have identified things that we can improve.
“We had meetings in February, March, April. So if we can, we will strengthen the team. So far I am very happy with what we have.”
Arsenal's first move of the window saw the club turn David Raya's loan from Brentford into a permanent transfer after a successful season at the Emirates. They made their first signing on Monday after announcing the arrival of Italy star Riccardo Calafiori.
Calafiori's arrival means Arsenal have spent almost $240m on 11 defenders since Arteta returned to the club in December 2019.
The Gunners are expected to lose Hale End academy graduate Emile Smith Rowe in the coming days. The 24-year-old is set to join Fulham after falling out with Arsenal, ending his 14-year spell in north London.
