NHL Rumors: Florida Panthers, and Columbus Blue Jackets
The Florida Panthers will not trade Patrik Laine
George Richards of Florida Hockey Now: Given that Patrik Laine has two years left at $8.7 million, the Florida Panthers are not a team that would be interested in trading him.
Laine trains in South Florida and one of his best friends is Aleksander Barkov. He also knows fellow Finnish Panthers players Eetu Luostarinen, Anton Lundell, and Niko Mikkola. Laine spent four seasons under Paul Maurice in Winnipeg where he scored 138 goals.
Now isn't the time to see Laine in a Panthers jersey, but when you're 26 and only have two years left in unrestricted free agency, something is happening down the road.
NHL Rumors: Will Trevor Zegras Stay With Anaheim Ducks?
Columbus Blue Jackets vacant training camp, Cole Sillinger, and who could take over Patrik Laine's contract
Aaron Portzline of the Athletic: The Columbus Blue Jackets have one position open on their coaching staff. Newly hired coach Dean Evason will be able to bring in one or two assistant coaches. If there are two, the places of Jared Boll, Steve McCarthy and Mark Recchi could be in jeopardy.
Cole Sillinger is the last remaining RFA for the Blue Jackets. GM Don Waddell said the sides have talked about a number of different options and added that it's “100 percent done.”
NHL Rumors: Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid Extension Top Things for New GM Stan Bowman
There are only six teams with the salary cap space to take Patrik Laine's entire $8.7 million next season – Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes (drafted before Martin Necas re-signed – $6.44 million in space now), Detroit Red. Wings, San Jose Sharks, and Utah Hockey Club. If the Blue Jackets are determined to retain salary or bring back a player, the team's list doubles. Two guesses are the Ducks and Hurricanes and the Montreal Canadiens are an outside shot.
